No Drag Races!

By Dedrick Allan 04/08/2009

There will not be drag racing on Sanderson Field’s decommissioned runway this year or in the future. The Port of Shelton Commission approved a letter to both entities that have been vying for a lease to run drag racing events at the Airport this summer saying the Port can no longer allow that type of use. The letter explains the reasoning for the decision which includes the non-aviation use threatening funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, safety, environmental and habitat concerns, and Port officials now believe that drag racing has now outgrown the airport’s limited facilities. The letter was approved on a two to one vote with Commissioner Jack Miles voting against. Proponents of drag racing said they were disappointed by the Commission’s decision.
